+ wooden structure completed entierly without any nails

+houses the otawa waterfall which is divided into three streams.

+ drinking from the streams will bring either longevity, success in studies, and love life.

+ drinking from all three though is deemed as greedy.

+ the steep lanes approaching the temple are filled with people selling souvenirs, sweets (johnny) and pickles (ike)

+walk is pretty steep but the view is pretty good

KYOTO // Ryoanji Temple.

+ open 8.30-16.30 in the months of dec - feb
+ 500 yen admission
+ zen temple placed on the UNESCO world heritage site
+ the rock garden comprimises of raked gravel and 15 boulders. From all angles only + 14 boulders can be seen, the 15th boulder can only be seen with enlightenment.
+ can get very crowded, recommended to go early in the morning to enjoy the tranquility.

KYOTO // 9 Hour Stay Capsule Hotel

+ Ike and myself stayed here

+ pretty swanky for a capsule

+ get woken up by ambient sounds….mine didn’t work/didn’t set my alarm

+ in the centre of kyoto, next to gion. close to kawaramachi station

+ designer is trying to implement this style of capsule design around the world.

KYOTO // Fushimi Inari Shrine

+ located just outside JR Inari Station

+ always open and no admission
+ one of the most famous shrines in Japan
+ takes approximately 2 hours to walk the entire trail
+ Kitsune Udon is served in many small restaurants that surround the trail

+ really nice quaint walk to the top

NAOSHIMA // Shioya Diner

+ Owned by a husband and wife who are interested in American culture

+ The restaurant is filled with their collectibles and a curtain divides the main dining area to their living room

+ The husband is a prominent hot rod owner in Japan

+ Serve american styled BBQ food

+ Food is pretty average but they’re pretty nice guys.

+ pretty fun being in a mongolian yurt

+ much more spacious then i was expecting too.

+ includes work by Claude Monet, James Turrel and Walter de Maria
+ Special screening of Turrels work “open skys” on Friday and Saturday sunsets and on sundays in November.
+ tickets bought at ticket centre a short walk downhill from the museum
bags and cameras must be stowed away

+ James Turrell work is immaculately presented. Best thing ever

+ could splurge for 36960 yen for twin room/night. approx 454 dollars
+ able to wander the galleries at night
+ includes works by Andy Warhol, Richard Long, and Bruce Nauman
+ broken into 4 buildings: Museum, Park, Oval, Beach
+ access to Oval is restricted to hotel guests
+ restaurant is must try as all view direct to the bay
+ able to rent bicycles for use around island

+ combined price for all 6 galleries is 1000 yen or 400 yen to see 1
+ located on eastern part of island, Honmura
+ old village houses converted into art galleries
+ kinza is another art house but must be reserved 3 days in advance. Not included in the combined ticket. extra 500 yen. sometimes on fridays and saturdays reservations can be made 15 mins earlier with the house owner
